Weybrook Park Grand Opening Event

Updated for 01/08/21

On Thursday 24th June Weybrook Park Golf Club celebrated the opening of the new West Course with three times Ryder Cup Captain and golf legend Bernard Gallacher OBE hitting the honorary tee off shot. 28 teams played in the event, made up of Hampshire Golf and PGA South East Golf representatives, teams from local Golf Clubs and selected local golfers including the leader of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Ken Rhatigan who went on to say, “It was wonderful to be part of the Celebration of the opening of the West Course at Weybrook Park Golf Club , the course was in fantastic condition and will prove to be a real draw both across its existing membership but also to the wider golfing community. I know with the dedication of the greenkeeping staff as well as the excellent Food and Beverage offered at Weybrook Park that it will become a must visit for golfers and non- golfers alike.”

The opening of the West Course is the culmination of a seventeen-year development plan to create a high-quality golf course on what is a fantastic site. The West Course was formed in two parts; firstly, the development of a brand new 9 holes on farmland which was completed in 2016. This now forms the back 9 holes of the West Course. The original Weybrook front 9 holes were then completely reconstructed between 2016 and 2021 and now form the front 9 holes of the West Course.

Weybrook is a member owned and operated golf club and the project was planned and designed by club member Sandy Burrell. Burrell said “Weybrook has a great location on the edge of town and is a fantastic site for golf with great external views and located on free draining chalk which gives all year-round playability. I felt that if we could construct a top-quality course on this site, it would go a long way towards ensuring that the club had a viable future in what is a highly competitive local market.” The course is design as a chalk downland course. The holes use the topography to wind up and down a number of shallow valleys to create differing challenges. No less than five lakes have been constructed in the valleys to add further tests for the golfers. Four of these lakes are linked by a replica chalk stream which meanders through 4 of the back 9 holes.

General Manager and Club Professional, Steve Cox said, “The West Course is a superb layout and a real test of golf. With multiple tees and large greens, it raises the bar in terms of quality courses in Basingstoke and North Hampshire”. The opening of the West Course now gives Weybrook Park 27 golf holes in total. Those familiar with the club will recognise the original back 9 holes now branded as the East Course. Cox went on to say that the East course is a nice 9-hole course, in its own right, and is an excellent facility for those members and visitors who want a quick round. It is also a great place to learn to play the game away from the pressure of a busy main course.

The event was won by one of our guest teams, which included Mr Rhatigan. Second place went to Royal Ascot Golf Club with Material Matters finishing in third place.
